The Journey
Description
See Mt. Tyndall on NZ topo maps
THIS DAY CAN ONLY BE RUN IN COMBINATION WITH THE FOLLOWING DAY. IT CANNOT BE RUN AS A SINGLE DAY!
Mt. Tyndall is the highest peak on the South Island part of the Challenge. And reaching it won't be easy, especially given all that will already have passed by this stage. This epic day commences with a straightforward run up the Matukituki Valley to Aspiring Hut, but then it gets tough. An unbroken 1,400m climb to the The Pylon is just the start. Beyond lies the long ridge, some of it a permanent snowfield that will require crampons and ice axes, that climbs the remaining 600m to this stunning summit. Then it's back down the way we came, a gorgeous run to Cascade Saddle and down into the upper reaches of the Dart River, presided over by the majestic Dart Glacier. This truly stunning alpine section finally reaches its end at the Dart Hut where we will stay the night.
Important Notes
Support runners need to be self-sufficient in regards to transport to the start. While we MAY be able to offer some assistance this CANNOT be guaranteed.
Be prepared to carry everything you need for an alpine ascent and overnighting in a mountain hut. We'll hopefully be able to minimise the gear list but for the time being assume there'll be no outside help!
Experience of snow travel using crampons and ice axes is ESSENTIAL for this day. Do NOT underestimate how tough a day this will be.
