The Journey
Description
See Mt. Patriarch on NZ topo maps
Mt. Patriarch has long been on my bucket list, and with a bit of luck I may get to do a proper recce beforehand. If not, it'll be an even bigger adventure on Day 15.
This will be a Big day requiring good backcountry skills. The day starts with 9kms of the gorgeous Wangapeka Track, home to the rare native whio (duck). Leaving the Wangapeka our route takes us north through beech forest to Kiwi Saddle Hut. From here the track ramps up a notch, with 400m gain over 1.8k to break through the bush line on to the NE spur of Patriarch. From here it's untracked scree and spiny spaniards to make the summit at 1701m altitude. After soaking in the views we turn tail and head back outthe way we came.
Definitely not a day for the faint hearted or ill prepared.
Important Notes
Support runners need to be self-sufficient in regards to transport to the start and back from the finish. While we MAY be able to offer some assistance this CANNOT be guaranteed.
