The Journey
Description
See Angelus Peak on NZ topo maps
I have had a long love affair with Nelson Lakes, the first place I ever went tramping in New Zealand, so it's only fitting that this jewel of a National Park will provide one of the great highlights of the Challenge.
Make no mistake about it, this will be a massive day. From St. Arnaud village we run up the east side of the lake, cross the Travers River, then take on the lung-busting 1,000m climb to idyllic Lake Angelus. From here it's a rough, rocky route and a scramble to reach the summit of one of the seven 2,000m+ peaks of the Challenge. After returning to the Lake Angelus we'll make our way along the lofty, rocky Robert Ridge before plunging down the Pinchgut Track - surely one of the planet's greatest downhill runs - to the shores of Lake Rotoiti and eventually back to St. Arnaud.
Important Notes
Support runners need to be self-sufficient in regards to transport to the start and back from the finish.
Good scrambling skills and a sound head for heights are required for this day.
