The Journey
Description
See Knuckle Peak on NZ topo maps
THIS DAY CAN ONLY BE RUN IN COMBINATION WITH THE FOLLOWING DAY. IT CANNOT BE RUN AS A SINGLE DAY!
Day 19 will kick off in my hometown of Wanaka (oh, I do love being able to say that!) The first 15k is on the lakeside track out to beautiful Glendhu Bay, then a couple of kms of gravel road take us to the start of the Motatapu Track. This is stunning, rugged country that I know well but can never tire of. The first big climb takes us up and over Jack Halls Saddle, the second big climb takes us to a high point on the track. From here we climb Knuckle Peak by its untracked northern ridge and descend to the west to rejoin the Motatapu Track. Another steep descent delivers us to the main valley and Roses Hut where we will spend the night.
Important Notes
Support runners need to be self-sufficient in regards to transport to the start. While we MAY be able to offer some assistance this CANNOT be guaranteed.
Be prepared to carry everything you need for overnighting in a mountain hut. We'll hopefully be able to minimise the gear list but for the time being assume there'll be no outside help!
