The Journey
Description
See Dragonfly Peak on NZ topo maps
This will be one of the toughest, but also most beautiful days of the entire Challenge. We will venture deep into Aspiring National Park up the gobsmackingly gorgeous East Matukituki Valley on wonderful single track trail to Junction Flat. From here it's a massive climb through bush and then an untracked scrubby ridge, before an exposed sidle delivers us to Albert Burn Saddle. A further 500m of climbing beyond is the dramatic summit of Dragonfly Peak and its stunning panoramic views in every direction. A truly special place that I have visited just once before but have always longed to return to.
After soaking up all that beauty we turn tail and trash our legs on the 1750m descent back down the way we came. It's a simple out & back format, but a totally memorable and extremely tiring one!
Important Notes
Support runners need to be self-sufficient in regards to transport to the start and back from the finish. While we MAY be able to offer some assistance this CANNOT be guaranteed.
Good backcountry and rock scrambling skills, as well as a head for heights are essential for this day. Do NOT underestimate it - it's a very tough day.
