The Journey
Description
See Mt. Cunningham on NZ topo maps
THIS DAY CAN ONLY BE RUN IN COMBINATION WITH THE PREVIOUS DAY. IT CANNOT BE RUN AS A SINGLE DAY!
Starting from the Dart Hut we climb the steep and spectacular trail up to the Rees Saddle. Climbing beyond, sometimes scrambling through low bluffs, we'll reach Mt. Cunningham via its SE Ridge. The effort is worth it – the views are spectacular. Descending back to the Saddle we then have a long, but relatively straightforward, and always beautiful descent down the Rees Valley to the road end, about half an hour of Glenorchy
Important Notes
Support runners need to be self-sufficient in regards to transport back from the finish. While we MAY be able to offer some assistance this CANNOT be guaranteed.
Be prepared to carry everything you need for an alpine ascent and overnighting in a mountain hut. We'll hopefully be able to minimise the gear list but for the time being assume there'll be no outside help!
Experience of snow travel using crampons and ice axes is ESSENTIAL for this day. Do NOT underestimate how tough a day this will be.
