The Journey
Description
See Ben Lomond on NZ topo maps
Starting from the base of the gondola in Queenstown (yes, it will be tempting to hitch a ride!) we'll climb through the forest, aiming for the ridge that takes us over Bob's Peak and beyond to hook up with the Ben Lomond Walkway, which in turn takes us to the Lomond Saddle. From there we will climb the NE ridge of the peak to complete a 1500m ascent from NZ's adventure capital. The views from here are stunning, and after a brief stop to soak them up we'll head back down to the saddle and over the other side to Sefferstown, where we pick up the 4WD track to Moke Lake. After running most of the way around this wee gem of a lake we'll follow farm tracks downstream, criss-crossing Moke Creek a few dozen times until we reach the confluence with Moonlight Creek. From there it's few kms of hilly farm road to reach Ben Lomond Lodge where we will join the Foster Family (owners of Ben Lomond Station), the organisers of the Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon and a few of the other competitors in the next day's race.
Important Notes
Support runners need to be self-sufficient in regards to transport to the start and back from the finish. While we MAY be able to offer some assistance this CANNOT be guaranteed.
If you choose to run all the way to the Lodge, you'll have no choice but to stay the night. We should however be able to transport in a bag for you. The following day you can either figure a way out of there or join me in running the Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon, which finishes back at Moke Lake.
